    72 Hours in Limerick.

72 Hours in Limerick City & County

Stay in the city. Explore the county. Experience all of Limerick.

Stay, Taste & Explore with The Savoy Collection

Discover the best of Limerick City and County over three unforgettable days, using the heart of Limerick City as your base.

From medieval landmarks and vibrant city streets to the majestic River Shannon, picturesque villages, ancient archaeological sites and some of Ireland’s most beautiful countryside, Limerick offers the perfect combination of culture, heritage, food and outdoor adventure.

Stay right at the centre of it all with The Savoy Collection. Choose the five-star luxury of The Savoy Hotel or the contemporary four-star George Hotel, both perfectly located for exploring Limerick City and for setting off on day trips throughout the county.

And when the exploring is done, some of the city’s best dining and drinks are right on your doorstep, from Hamptons Bar & Grill and The Savoy Bar to Vincenzo Grill House & Bar at The George.

    Day 1: Discover Limerick City

Begin your 72-hour Limerick adventure right in the heart of the city.

After checking into The Savoy Hotel or The George Hotel, leave the car behind and discover just how much of Limerick can be explored on foot.

Start with a stroll towards the River Shannon and the historic heart of the city. Limerick’s skyline is dominated by the magnificent King John’s Castle, dramatically positioned on the banks of the Shannon. Wander through the historic streets surrounding King’s Island before visiting nearby St Mary’s Cathedral, one of the city’s most treasured landmarks.

Continue along the riverside and discover Limerick’s mix of medieval heritage and contemporary culture. Visit The Hunt Museum, explore the city centre shops or simply take in the views along the river.

For those who enjoy exploring on foot, the Three Bridges Walk is a wonderful way to see the city from a different perspective, taking in the Shannon, the bridges and some of Limerick’s most recognisable landmarks.

Lunch at Hamptons Bar & Grill

Return to Henry Street for lunch at Hamptons Bar & Grill, located beside The Savoy Hotel.

With its stylish New York-inspired interior and signature wood-fired Josper grill, Hamptons is a perfect city-centre stop for everything from an express lunch to a leisurely afternoon meal. Steaks, chicken and seafood are particular specialities of the grill.

Spend the afternoon discovering more of Limerick’s cultural side, browse the city’s independent shops and boutiques or visit the People’s Park and Georgian Quarter.

Limerick is also one of Ireland’s great sporting cities. Rugby fans can soak up the atmosphere of Munster Rugby country, while visitors arriving on a match weekend will quickly discover just how deeply sport is woven into the character of the city.

    Five-Star Afternoon Tea

For something a little more indulgent, return to The Savoy Hotel and escape into The Library, with its book-lined walls, rich furnishings and elegant afternoon tea – a relaxing interlude after a busy day exploring.

Dinner & Drinks in the City

As evening arrives, there is no need to venture far.

Head to Vincenzo Grill House at The George Hotel, where a lively city-centre atmosphere, cocktails and classic dishes make it a great choice for dinner. Vincenzo serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, sharing plates and bar food, with an emphasis on ingredients sourced from local artisan suppliers.

After dinner, continue the evening at Vincenzo Bar, or stroll back towards Henry Street and settle into The Savoy Bar.

Inspired by the glamour of The Savoy’s 1920s heritage, The Savoy Bar transforms effortlessly from a relaxed daytime space into a sophisticated evening destination, with cocktails taking centre stage after dark.

Then it’s just a short walk upstairs to bed.

    Day 2:

    Follow the Shannon into West

After breakfast, pick up the car and set off west from Limerick City for a day of scenery, history and adventure.

Your first stop is Curragh Chase Forest Park, an idyllic estate of woodland, lakes and walking trails near Kilcornan.

With 313 hectares of mixed woodland and around 8km of multi-purpose waymarked trails, it is an ideal place to stretch the legs before continuing your journey west. Trails range from accessible family routes to longer walking and cycling options.

From Curragh Chase, continue along the Shannon Estuary towards Foynes.

Take a Trip Down Memory Lane at Foynes

Today a peaceful estuary village, Foynes once stood at the crossroads of Europe and America during the pioneering days of transatlantic aviation.

At the Foynes Flying Boat & Maritime Museum, discover the golden age of flying boats and follow in the footsteps of some of the famous passengers who travelled through Foynes.

The museum occupies the original terminal building and recalls the period from 1939 to 1945 when Foynes was at the centre of the aviation world. Visitors can even step aboard a life-size replica of a Boeing 314 Flying Boat.

Foynes also has another claim to fame: Irish Coffee was first served here in 1943, created for weary travellers passing through the flying boat terminal.

Continue west along the estuary to the picturesque village of Glin, historically associated with the Knights of Glin, before turning inland towards Newcastle West.

Newcastle West is the largest town in West Limerick and makes an ideal stopping point for lunch and a wander through the town.

Walk or Cycle the Limerick Greenway

From Newcastle West, experience a section of the spectacular Limerick Greenway.

Following the old Limerick-to-Kerry railway line, the traffic-free Greenway extends for 40km between Rathkeale and Abbeyfeale and can easily be explored in shorter sections.

Highlights along the route include Barnagh Tunnel, Ferguson’s Viaduct and the restored railway heritage of West Limerick, while the surrounding countryside provides a wonderful snapshot of rural Ireland.

Whether you walk for an hour or hire bikes and explore further, it is one of the best ways to slow down and experience another side of County Limerick.

    Evening in Adare

On the journey back to Limerick City, take a detour through Adare.

Located approximately 18km south-west of Limerick City, Adare is known for its picture-postcard thatched cottages, historic buildings, boutiques, cafés and restaurants and is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s most beautiful villages.

Adare is also preparing to take centre stage internationally when Adare Manor hosts the Ryder Cup from 13–19 September 2027, bringing one of world sport’s greatest events to County Limerick.

Return to Limerick City for the evening and let someone else do the cooking.

    Dinner at Hamptons

After a day on the road, enjoy dinner at Hamptons Bar & Grill. Think steaks and seafood from the Josper grill, great wine and a buzzing city-centre atmosphere.

Finish the night with a cocktail at The Savoy Bar before returning to the comfort of your room at The Savoy or The George.

    Day 3:

    Go Off Grid

Day three is all about discovering the quieter side of County Limerick.

Head south from Limerick City through rolling agricultural countryside towards Ballyhoura Country, one of the county’s great outdoor playgrounds.

Walking, cycling and mountain trails wind through this spectacular landscape, making it the perfect place for anyone looking to escape the city and reconnect with the outdoors.

Continue towards Kilmallock, one of Ireland’s most impressive medieval towns.

Set in the valley of the River Loobagh with the Ballyhoura Hills to the south, Kilmallock was once one of the region’s great centres of trade and commerce. Its surviving medieval architecture provides a fascinating glimpse into Limerick’s past.

From Kilmallock, make your way towards one of County Limerick’s most extraordinary historic landscapes – Lough Gur.

Step Back 6,000 Years at Lough Gur

Beautiful, mysterious and steeped in history, Lough Gur is one of Ireland’s most important archaeological landscapes.

The area preserves evidence of thousands of years of human settlement, while nearby Grange Stone Circle contains 113 standing stones and is the largest stone circle in Ireland.

Explore the visitor experience, take in the lake views and learn about the first farmers who lived in this landscape thousands of years ago.

It is a place where Irish history suddenly feels very close.

    Glenstal Abbey

If time allows, continue north-east towards Glenstal Abbey near Murroe.

Home to a Benedictine monastic community, Glenstal offers visitors an opportunity to experience a completely different pace of life. Visitors are welcome to attend prayer in the Abbey Church and to walk designated areas of the beautiful grounds.

Then point the car back towards Limerick City.

    One Last Taste of Limerick

After three days of castles, rivers, forests, villages, stone circles and country roads, return to the city for one final evening with The Savoy Collection.

Dress up for cocktails in The Savoy Bar, enjoy a relaxed dinner at Vincenzo Grill House, or settle in for another evening around the Josper grill at Hamptons Bar & Grill.

Limerick’s food scene is as varied as the county itself – but staying with The Savoy Collection means some of the city’s most enjoyable dining and nightlife are just moments from your bedroom.

And when the night is over, retreat to either the five-star Savoy Hotel, offering luxury in the heart of Limerick City, or the contemporary four-star George Hotel, perfectly placed for a stylish city break.

Make Limerick Your Next City Break

72 hours is just enough time to discover why Limerick deserves to be explored.

A city with medieval history and modern energy.
A county of rivers, mountains, greenways and ancient landscapes.
A destination shaped by food, sport, culture and genuine Irish hospitality.

And at the heart of your Limerick experience, make The Savoy Collection your base for sleeping, dining, drinking and discovering.

Stay in the city. Explore the county. Experience Limerick.
